HOVERMAN ANTENNA
HOVERMAN SPEC SHEET
This is the spec sheet I have used to build many successful antennas. CLICK HERE FOR A PRINTABLE DIAGRAM.
Watch the videos below for the details. The only strict rule is the measurements of the design, measure carefully and pay attention to angles. The addition of a reflector screen set back 4.5" from the element improves performance greatly.
With Reflector; Field of View 120° forward, 0° from rear. Without Reflector; Field of view 120° forward and backward.
Tested Effective range 1 to 50 miles without amplification or boosters, you shouldn't need one, but try it of you have one.
Excellent reception for all UHF (470-608MHz) frequencies. Fair reception on Hi-VHF (192-220 MHz).
The Hoverman design is in the public domain.
CREATING THE ELEMENT
The Video below walks you through the steps of creating a secure element.
You need 60 inches of #10 or #12 copper wire per side. Straighten the wire before attempting to create this element.
BACKBONE & INSULATORS
PUT IT ALL TOGETHER
Stainless Steel Fasteners are best, other material such as zink plated or steel will corrode over time. Use a good screwdriver and hand tighten.
REFLECTOR
The preferred reflector setback is 4.5 in for a GH, you can experiment with more or less.
A good reflector mesh needs to be somewhat stiff to remain steady in the wind. Galvanized is preferred for rust prevention but not required. The material shown may not be available in all areas and I have used 2x2", 2x3" or 1x2" mesh sizes with good results, sizes over 2x3"are too large. Never use chicken wire, it really is not suited for the job, it's miserable stuff.
